Named in honor of Hall of Fame filly Ruffian, the Ruffian Handicap is run at Belmont Park for fillies and mares four years and older going a mile (8 furlongs) on the dirt. Hall of Fame mare Lady’s Secret is the only mare to win the race twice (1985, 1986) with jockey John Velazquez winning the most races of any jockeys with six. Shug McGaughey and Bobby Frankel both lead the charge for the trainers with three wins each. The race has been run at a variety of distances in its history and was only switched to a mile in 2013 when it was moved from the fall to the summer.
