Hall of Fame trainer H. Allen "Chief" Jerkens (1929-2015) began training Thoroughbreds since 1950. His first victory came on July 4 of that year when Populace won at Aqueduct. In 1957 he became the private trainer for Jack Dreyfus Jr.’s Hobeau Farm.
Jerkens became known as the "Giant Killer" after saddling horses that upset champions Kelso, Cicada, Buckpasser, Secretariat, Riva Ridge and Forego. He earned the Eclipse Award as a trainer in 1973 and 1984, and was New York's leading trainer five times.

Jerkens' sons Jimmy and Steven also train Thoroughbreds, with Jimmy having trained two Breeders' Cup winners.
Horses Jerkens conditioned include champion Sky Beauty as well as Grade 1 winners Devil His Due, Society Selection, Shine Again, Miss Shop, Wagon Limit and Classy Mirage.
