First run in 1982, the Stephen Foster is named after the composer Stephen Foster who wrote songs such as “My Old Kentucky Home.” Run at 1 1/8 miles (nine furlongs), the race is open to horses 3 years and older on the dirt at Churchill Downs. Robby Albarado won the race three consecutive times from 2007 to 2009 with Pat Day tied with him at the top of the leaderboard with three wins as well. Vodka Collins and Recoup the Cash are the only two horses to win the race twice while four trainers have also won the race twice.

Horses such as Black Tie Affair, Victory Gallop, Street Cry, Perfect Drift, Saint Liam, Curlin and Blame have all won the race.
