Run on the Kentucky Derby undercard, the American Turf Stakes was created in 1992 and provides 3-year-old router turf males a chance to run on Derby day going 1 1/16 miles (8.5 furlongs). The race has been won by some familiar names with Kitten’s Joy and Silver Max among the winners. Trainers Tom Proctor, Dale Romans, Elliott Walden and Tom Amoss have all won the race twice with jockeys Garrett Gomez, Gary Stevens and Jerry Bailey all having the most wins by a jockey at three each.
