After serving in World War II, Leonard Lavin acquired a small Chicago-based regional maker of beauty supplies in 1955 and parlayed it into the Alberto-Culver Co. The international Fortune 1000 company, which produces and markets well-known consumer brands in the toiletry, household, and food fields, includes Sally Beauty Co., the largest distributor of professional beauty products in the world.
Lavin purchased former Greentree Stud property near Ocala, Fla., in 1966 to create the 400-acre Glen Hill Farm. In April 2008, Lavin's grandson, Craig Bernick, took over the reins of Glen Hill, becoming its president and COO after working at Alberto-Culver for a time. Hap Proctor has been running the farm since 1991.
Relaunch probably is the best-remembered horse who raced with the iconic Glen Hill silks. After a distinguished racing career, he went on to become a prominent sire. His daughter One Dreamer won the 1994 Breeders' Cup Distaff as a homebred for the farm. Recent top horses campaigned by Glen Hill include multiple Grade 1 winner Marketing Mix, Grade 1 winner Chiropractor and multiple graded stakes winners Pontchatrain, Wishing Gate, Global View and Banned.
