Good Samaritan charged from off the pace to win his career debut by a head on Aug. 13, 2016, at Saratoga Race Course before employing the same tactics to prevail in his stakes debut in the Grade 2 Summer Stakes at Woodbine. The one-mile Summer Stakes for 2-year-olds is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series "Win and You're In" race, and thus earned Good Samaritan an automatic starting Spot in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.
Good Samaritan encountered early trouble in the Juvenile Turf but closed powerfully to finish third, beaten by less than two lengths.

The bay colt opened his 2017 season with a runner-up finish in the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes on the Kentucky Derby undercard. He then ran second again in the Penninne Ridge Stakes at Belmont Park before finishing fourth, beaten by three lengths, in the $1.2 million Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes.
Following the Belmont Derby, Trainer Bill Mott and Good Samaritan's owners opted to test him on the dirt and he exceeded expectations. Good Samaritan charged from last to first to with the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets, overhauling Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming and Preakness winner Cloud Computing en route to the victory.
Returning in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets on Aug. 26 at Saratoga, Good Samaritan settled in last among the 12 contenders and made a mild rally through the stretch to finish fifth.
Good Samaritan returned in the fall of 2017 to face older horses in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup and finished fourth. He closed his 3-year-old season with a runner-up finish by a half-length in the Grade 1 Clark Handicap Presented by Norton Healthcare.
In his 2018 debut, Good Samaritan halted a three-race winless stretch with a dominant victory in the Grade 2 New Orleans Handicap on March 24 at Fair Grounds.
WinStar bred Good Samaritan in Kentucky out of the Pulpit mare Pull Dancer. His second dam, Mayhavebeentheone, is a half sister to graded stakes winner and sire Wiseman's Ferry. The family includes graded stakes winner and sire Bernstein.
