The Goodwood Stakes has been run at Santa Anita Park annually since 1982, recognizing Santa Anita’s long-time partnership with the Oak Tree Racing Association, which leased Santa Anita for from 1969 to 2009 for the fall meet. It has changed names several times through the decades. It started out as a handicap and was named the Goodwood Breeders’ Cup Handicap from 1996 through 2006. The Goodwood transitioned to a stakes race in 2007 and, in 2012, was renamed the Awesome Again Stakes in honor of the 1998 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner.

Santa Anita ran the race in 2024 as the California Crown as the signature race of a larger California Crown card, but in 2025 the track returned to its roots and renamed it the Goodwood Stakes.

The race is open to horses age three and older and is contested at a distance of 1 1/8 miles (nine furlongs). This race is an important West Coast prep race for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and is a "Win and You're In" qualifier for that race.

The race has been won a record five times by jockey Gary Stevens and Bob Baffert is the all-time leader with eight victories in the race. The Goodwood has sent five winners on to capture the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic: Ferdinand in 1987, Tiznow in 2000, Pleasantly Perfect in 2003, Mucho Macho Man in 2013, and Accelerate in 2018. 

Other notable horses to have won the Awesome Again include Lava Man, Tiznow, Silver Charm, and Bertrando.
