Making his debut in late June of his 4-year-old year, Smooth Roller had a quick climb to fame. The gelding won his first two starts before finishing fourth in an ungraded stakes race at Del Mar. But that finish against stakes company didn't dissuade his connections from trying Grade 1 company. Smooth Roller took on a field that included Grade 1 winners Bayern and Hoppertunity and easily won by five lengths.
