Established in 1919, this race is open to 3-year-olds and older and it is contested at a distance of 1 1/4 miles (10 furlongs). The race is a "Win and You're In" qualifier for the Breeders' Cup Classic and moved from Belmont Park to Saratoga Race Course in 2021.

Hall of Famers Kelso (horse) and Eddie Arcaro (jockey) won this race an amazing five and ten times, respectively. Other famous equines to gain Jockey Club Gold Cup glory include Man o' War, Princequillo, Nashua, Damascus, Forego, John Henry, Easy Goer, Skip Away, Bernardini and Curlin. The race has been won by five Triple Crown winners including Gallant Fox, War Admiral, Whirlaway, Citation and Affirmed.
