Hoppertunity punched his ticket to the 2014 Kentucky Derby with a determined win in the $600,000 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who won the Rebel in 2010 with Lookin At Lucky, 2011 with The Factor and 2012 with Secret Circle.

He finished second to top classics hopeful California Chrome in the Santa Anita Derby in his final prep race for the Kentucky Derby. Hoppertunity had to scratch out of the Kentucky Derby two days before the race but returned in the fall and won the Grade 1 Clark Handicap in his second start off the layoff.

As a 4-year-old Hoppertunity won the San Pasqual and has finished third in the San Antonio and the Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs. He also finished second in the Grade 1 Gold Cup and fourth in both the San Diego Handicap and the Pacific Classic before a solid runner-up finish in the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes. He closed out the year with back-to-back seconds in the Grade 2 Fayette Stakes and Grade 1 Clark Handicap.

Hoppertunity began his 5-year-old season with a third-place finish in the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes but he bounced back in a big way with a win in the Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes. Baffert then sent the horse to Dubai, where he finished third behind California Chrome in the $10 million Dubai World Cup. He then posted back-to-back fourth place finishes in California, the second to California Chrome again in the Pacific Classic, before scoring the biggest win of his career when shipping to New York in October. With John Velazquez aboard, Hoppertunity wore down favorite Effinex in the final yards to win the 1 1/4-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park. That win earned him an automatic berth in the Breeders' Cup Classic on Nov. 5 at Santa Anita Park. 

Hoppertunity finished fourth in both the 2016 Breeders' Cup Classic and the Grade 1 Clark Handicap but bounced back with a victory in his 2017 debut, charging from off the pace to take the Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes. Over the rest of 2017, Hoppertunity finished second once and third once in four more starts, and he was kept in training for 2018. He made his 2018 debut a winning one as well, scoring in the Grade 3 Tokyo City Cup Stakes as the odds-on favorite.

After a fourth-place finish in the Alysheba on the Kentucky Oaks undercard, Hoppertunity traveled to New York for a Belmont Stakes day appearance, where he wore down War Story to win the 1 1/2-mile Brooklyn Stakes impressively and push his career earnings to well over $4.6 million.

Hoppertunity was a $300,000 purchase by Baffert on behalf of owners Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman at the 2012 Keeneland September yearling sale. He is a half-brother to multiple Grade 1 winner Executiveprivilege, who was trained by Baffert and raced by Pegram, Watson, and Weitman.

Hoppertunity's third dam (maternal great-grandmother) is 1979 champion 3-year-old filly Davona Dale, who was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1985.
