The ownership group of Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Westerberg, Rocket Ship Racing, and Peter Brant enjoyed success in 2024 with standout 3-year-old Sierra Leone, winner of the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic and Toyota Blue Grass Stakes and runner-up by a nose in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.

Magnier, Tabor, and Smith are part of the Ireland-based, internationally successful Coolmore group. Brook Smith is a Louisville businessman, insurance executive, and philanthropist who became a fan of horse racing when attending the Kentucky Derby in 1995. Peter Brant built a fortune in the paper mill industry and publishing, and made his foray into Thoroughbred racing in the 1970s, campaigning standouts including Just a Game, Waya, and Gulch. After a lengthy absence, Brant returned to the horse business in 2016 and quickly resumed winning marquee races with horses such as Sistercharlie.

Coolmore and Peter Brant purchased Sierra Leone for $2.3 million as a yearling at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select sale.
