He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and earned a master's degree from the Columbia Business School. Evans and his wife, Susan, have three children and two grandchildren.
Evans became involved in racing when his father, Thomas Mellon Evans, started a Thoroughbred farm in 1964. Thomas Evans' Buckland Farm campaigned 1981 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner and champion 3-year-old colt Pleasant Colony as well as champions Pleasant Stage and Pleasant Tap.
Robert Evans owns Courtland Farm in Maryland and has campaigned multiple graded stakes winners Sewickley, Shared Interest and Marsh Side as well as 2014 Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist, who went on to tally three more Grade 1 wins and now stands as a stallion at Lane's End Farm. Evans also maintains a breeding operation and is the breeder of champion Cash Run and her half-brother, sire Forestry.
Other notable racehorses owned by Evans include Irish Mission, Unitarian, Marsh Side, Akronism and New Economy.
