The Clark Handicap was inaugurated in 1875 and is an important race on the fall racing calendar. The race is run at 1 1/8 miles at Churchill Downs on the day after Thanksgiving, and was named for Col. M. Lewis Clark, founder of the Louisville Jockey Club which built Churchill Downs.

Famous horses to have won the race include Exterminator, Whirlaway, Silver Charm, Saint Liam, Wise Dan and Will Take Charge. The race has been won three times by trainers Ben Jones and Smiley Adams, and four times by jockeys Isaac Burns Murphy and Pat Day. Horses Hodge, Bold Favorite and Bob's Dusty each won the race twice.
