First run in 1940 and open to all horses at Aqueduct Racetrack, the New York Stakes was permanently moved to Belmont Park in 1975 where it is currently run at a distance of 1 ¼ miles (10 furlongs) for fillies and mares who are four or older. Capades holds the honor of the fastest time at the current distance, winning the race in 1990 in a time of 1:58.40. Both Blue Thor (1963, 1965) and Batteur (1964, 1965) have won the race twice with the race run in two divisions in 1960, 1965, 1966, 1969, 1970, 1971 and 1978. Three jockeys have won the race four times to lead all horses while Christophe Clement leads all trainers with four wins in the race. Important horses who won the race include Stymie (146), Miss Grillo (1948), Hill Prince (1951), Crafty Admiral (1953), Just a Game (1980), Sabin (1983) and Soaring Softly (1999).
