Open to all horses four years and older going one mile on the turf at Keeneland, the Maker’s 46 Mile was first run in 1989 as the 1 1/16 mile Fort Harrod Stakes but was shortened to a mile the following year. In 1997, the race picked up the Maker’s Mark sponsorship and went through a name change to the Maker's Mark Mile before a third name change in 2012 changed it to the Maker’s 46 Mile. Earning a Grade 1 distinction in 2008, the race continues to be a Grade 1 to this day and has been won by Wise Dan and Kip Deville twice each.
