Formerly the Goodwood, the Awesome Again Stakes has been run at Santa Anita Park annually since 1982. It is open to horses age three and older and is contested at a distance of 1 1/8 miles (nine furlongs). This race is an important West Coast prep race for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and is a "Win and You're In" qualifier for that race.

The race has been won a record five times each by jockey Gary Stevens and trainer Charlie Whittingham. Two owners and three horses each have two wins in the race- Peter Perkins with Lord At War and Diamond A Racing with Pleasantly Perfect all have two wins in the race. Game On Dude has also won the race twice but with different ownership. Two Breeders' Cup Classic winners have won the race in the 2000s: Tiznow and Mucho Macho Man.
Other notable horses to have won the Awesome Again include Lava Man, Tiznow, Silver Charm, Bertrando and Ferdinand.
