West Coast finished second in his career debut for trainer Bob Baffert before a runaway victory at 1-20 odds. He earned back-to-back triple-digit Equibase Speed Figures for his first two races. Tested in stakes competition, West Coast then finished a game second in the Grade 3 Stonestreet Lexington Stakes at Keeneland Race Course.

After winning an allowance optional claiming race in California, West Coast shipped to New York and won the Easy Goer Stakes on the Belmont Stakes undercard. He stretched his win streak to three with an impressive win in the Grade 3 Los Alamitos Derby in July.
Sent to the 148th Travers Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets to challenge the East Coast’s best horses, West Coast set a contested pace and pulled away through the stretch to score his fourth consecutive win by 3 ¼ lengths under Mike Smith.
In the Grade 1, $1 million Pennsylvania Derby, West Coast had a chance to elevate himself into the championship picture for the Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old male. He did just that with a runaway victory over nine opponents to extend his winning streak to five, inclduing three straight graded stakes. He then finished third behind Gun Runner and stablemate Collectedin the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Nov. 4 at Del Mar. West Coast's dazzling second half of the season was enough to earn him the Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old male.
West Coast made his 4-year-old bow in the $16 million Pegasus World Cup as part of a field of 12 of horse racing's elite dirt horses. He launched his bid on the turn and challenged reigning Horse of the Year Gun Runner in early stretch but he could not get past his determined opponent in the final furlong and settled for second place in the world's richest race. He followed with another runner-up finish against elite competition when second to Thunder Snow in the $10 million Dubai World Cup on March 31.
Given an extended respite after the Dubai trip, West Coast returned to the races on Sept. 29 at Santa Anita Park in the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes. He set a strong pace in the 1 1/8-mile race and battled bravely in the stretch, but he could not hold off Accelerate and settled for second.
