Run at Keeneland every spring over seven furlongs on the dirt for horses aged 4 and older, the Commonwealth Stakes was first run in 1987 with Exclusive Enough winning that edition. Distorted Humor won the race in the fastest time, stopping the clock in 1:20.40 in 1998 and Black Tie Affair is the only horse to win the race more than once. Both jockey Edgar Prado and trainer Todd Pletcher have won three editions of the race with the pair combining to win the 2003 edition with Smooth Jazz for Michael Tabor. Other equine winners of the race are Alydeed, Afternoon Dellites, Richter Scale, Orientate and Sun King.
