Extra Anejo was one of the standout 2-year-olds during Keeneland’s fall 2022 meet as he romped in his seven-furlong debut by 9 ½ lengths. He was sidelined due to an ankle injury after that blowout win, however, and did not race again until May 2023 during Kentucky Derby week at Churchill Downs, where he finished a solid second in his return.
Extra Anejo was one of the standout 2-year-olds during Keeneland’s fall 2022 meet as he romped in his seven-furlong debut by 9 ½ lengths. He was sidelined due to an ankle injury after that blowout win, however, and did not race again until May 2023 during Kentucky Derby week at Churchill Downs, where he finished a solid second in his return.
The Into Mischief colt won his second 3-year-old start, a one-mile allowance race at Ellis Park, by an overpowering 6 ¼ lengths and then was moved up to test Grade 1 company in the TVG.com Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park, where he finished fourth.
Over the next 14 months, Extra Anejo made four starts and won two allowance optional claiming races at Churchill Downs, before being sidelined again. He came back in an ambitious spot, the Grade 3 Commonwealth Stakes on April 8, 2025, at Keeneland, and returning to the site of his maiden win 2 ½ years ago made all the difference as Extra Anejo powered from off of the pace to win the seven-furlong race by 1 ½ lengths.
Kentucky-bred Extra Anejo was purchased for $1.35 million as a yearling by owner Winchell Thoroughbreds at the 2021 Keeneland September yearling auction. He is out of the winning Hard Spun mare Superioritycomplex and is from the family of U.S. champion turf female Islington.
