First run in 1895, the Carter Handicap has moved back and forth between Aqueduct and Belmont Stakes through the year with it finally settling at Aqueduct in 1994. Run at seven furlongs for horses four years and older, the Carter Handicap had a three-way dead heat in 1944 with another dead heat in 1977. Six horses have won the race twice with four trainers tying at the top of the list with four wins each.  On the equine winners’ list is Beldame, Old Rosebud, Flying Heels, Caterwaul, Apache, Gallorette, Tom Fool, Bold Ruler, In Reality, King’s Bishop, Forego, Gulch, Rubiano, Alydeed, Lite the Fuse, and Congaree.
