First run in 1968, the San Simeon is a turf sprint that has been run at about 6 ½ furlongs since 1980 at Santa Anita. Since 1980, it has been run mostly on turf but did have three runnings on the dirt when rained off the tuf with the most recent running on that surface coming in 2007. Other than that one running, it has been on the downhill turf course since 1991 with horses like Finder’s Fee, Flick, Stoneside, Regally Ready and California Flag winning the race on that course. Trainer Ron McAnally has won the race five times with his first victory coming in 1976.
