Running since 1887, the Brooklyn Handicap was first run at Gravesend Race Track and was switched around to three other racetracks before finding a permanent home at Belmont Park in 1977. The race has also been run at a variety of distances on the dirt but is currently held at 12 furlongs (1 ½ miles) for horses 4-years-old and older.

Both Discovery and Forego won the race three times with Eddie Arcaro winning it seven times from 1944 to 1961 with Jam Hildreth holding the record for most wins by a trainer with seven.
