Arizona native Mike Puype began training horses in 1986 at age 20, and five years later moved to Southern California to be an assistant under trainer Walter Greenman. Puype eventually set out on his own, training such notable horses as Cobra King, Old Trieste and multiple Grade 1 winner Turbulent Descent.
Puype is best known for conditioning multiple Grade 1 winner and two-time Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner Mizdirection, a mare owned in part by sports talk radio personality Jim Rome.
