Sonneteer finished second or third in five of his first eight races but was still in search of his first victory entering the Grade 2, $900,000 Rebel Stakes on March 18 at Oaklawn Park. He did not visit the winner's circle after the Rebel but he did turn in a career-best performance while finishing second to winner Malagacy in his graded stakes debut. In his only previous stakes race, Sonneteer finished fourth in the California Derby in his 2017 bow.
