Equibase Leaders: Lucrative Kentucky Downs Purses Affect Standings
The $1 million Rogers Woodbine Mile Stakes features a plethora of intriguing storylines, including last year’s winner, Win for the Money, seeking a repeat win Sept. 13 at Woodbine.
The race also lured an English classic winner seeking to regain his top form for connections that have won two of the last three editions of this race, a South African star making his North American debut, and a 3-year-old standout facing older males for the first time.
The Woodbine Mile is a Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series “Win and You’re In” qualifying race for the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile Presented by PDJF, one of three races on Woodbine’s Turf Champions Day card that grant the victor an expenses-paid Breeders’ Cup berth. The $500,000 bet365 Summer Stakes is a “Win and You’re In” race for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Oct. 31 at Del Mar and the $500,000 Johnnie Walker Natalma Stakes is a Challenge Series race for the $1 million John Deere Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.
The three Challenge Series races also comprise a special Turf Champions Pick 3 linking the day’s three marquee races that will carry a $5 minimum and player-friendly 15% takeout. Those three races plus two other stakes Saturday at Woodbine will be televised by FanDuel TV as part of their comprehensive race-day coverage.
The Woodbine Mile has been won by star racehorses such as Leroidesanimaux, Shakespeare, Ventura, Wise Dan (twice), Tepin, World Approval, Modern Games, and Master of The Seas.

Jockey: Leo Salles
Trainer: Mike De Paulo
Owners: John E. Russell and Diana L. Russell
Career record: 22 starts – 4 wins – 7 seconds – 3 thirds
Career earnings: $432,455
Top Equibase Speed Figure: 109
Pedigree: Army Mule – Stormy's Song, by Unbridled's Song
Age: 5
Color: Dark bay or brown
Running style: Press the pace
Analysis: In his three races on grass, Stanley House has shown much more early speed than in his 19 starts on all-weather surfaces, so I would expect him to play a role in the pace scenario in the Woodbine Mile. The 5-year-old by Army Mule enters off his first career stakes win, a front-running, four-length romp in the 1 ¼-mile Niagara Stakes Aug. 2 on the turf at Woodbine. He cuts back in distance to a mile for trainer Mike De Paulo and would need to produce a career-best effort to post a victory, but Stanley House is fast enough to be a factor in the Woodbine Mile and has placed five times in graded stakes. He’s also versatile enough to rate just in behind the leaders if the pace is fast and make a bid for the lead entering the stretch. If you are looking for a horse to spice up your trifecta bet, Stanley House could be an appealing option at long odds.
Jockey: William Buick
Trainer: Charlie Appleby
Owner: Godolphin
Career record: 12 starts – 5 wins – 1 second – 1 third
Career earnings: $1,716,993
Top Equibase Speed Figure: 122
Pedigree: Dubawi – Swift Rose, by Invincible Spirit
Age: 4
Color: Chestnut
Running style: Closer
Analysis: Trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick partnered to win the Woodbine Mile in 2022 with Modern Games and 2023 with Master of The Seas but were denied a third straight win in the race a year ago when Naval Power flattened out late in a fourth-place finish. They return in 2025 with another talented Godolphin homebred, Notable Speech, the third-place finisher in last year’s FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile presented by PDJF. The Dubawi colt was an English classic winner a year ago at age 3 but is winless in four races this year. He was beaten by less than three lengths in Group 1 races in each of his first three starts before showing improved form in his most recent race. Notable Speech closed with a powerful rush after getting trapped behind traffic in the Group 1 The Aga Khan Studs Prix Jacques Le Marois Aug. 17 at Deauville and came up a head short of Diego Velazquez. Given his connections, his effort in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile, and multiple successes at this Group 1 level, Notable Speech probably will be the favorite in this year’s Woodbine Mile and will be tough to beat with a top effort.
3. One Stripe
Jockey: John Velazquez
Trainer: Graham Motion
Owners: Hollywood Racing
Career record: 9 starts – 6 wins – 1 seconds – 0 thirds
Career earnings: $234,493
Top Equibase Speed Figure: N/A
Pedigree: One World – Silver Stripe, by Silvano
Age: 4
Color: Bay
Running style: Stalker
Analysis: One Stripe makes his Northern Hemisphere debut for trainer Graham Motion in the Woodbine Mile with a terrific résumé in his native South Africa. The One World colt has five group stakes wins to his credit, including a pair of Group 1s, and earned an expenses-paid berth in the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile Presented by PDJF via his 1 ¾-length victory Jan. 4 as the 11-10 favorite in the $3 million L’Ormarins King’s Plate at Kenilworth. One Stripe subsequently had a three-race winning streak halted by a troubled trip when unplaced March 16 at Kenilworth. The colt then was shipped to the U.S. to Motion and returns from the extended layoff for his first North American start as a bit of a wild card. The 5 ½-month layoff is a valid concern, but One Stripe is 3-for-3 at this one-mile distance with a track record of success against elite competition. He looks like a major player and picks up the services of five-time Woodbine Mile winner John Velazquez (Riviera, 2000; Leroidesanimaux, 2005; Wise Dan, 2012-’13; and World Approval, 2017).
4. Hunt Master
Jockey: Eswan Flores
Trainer: Martin Hinckson
Owner: Bruno Schickedanz
Career record: 30 starts – 6 wins – 9 seconds – 4 thirds
Career earnings: $376,834
Top Equibase Speed Figure: 104
Pedigree: Hunters Bay – Lady Marchfield, by Marchfield
Age: 6
Color: Bay
Running style: Pacesetter
Analysis: Hunt Master competed in the Queen’s Plate in 2022 and won a minor stakes race at Woodbine in 2024, but he makes his graded stakes debut in the Woodbine Mile against an accomplished group. Speed is Hunt Master’s best asset, but it looks like he should have company up front from My Boy Prince as well as several others who prefer to press the pace. This is an ambitious assignment for the 6-year-old Hunters Bay gelding, who probably would need to boost his career-top Equibase Speed Figure by 10-12 points to be a viable win threat for trainer David Borsk. Hunt Master is cross-entered in the Branded Cities Vigil Stakes, also held Saturday at Woodbine.
5. Wyoming Bill
Jockey: Frankie Dettori
Trainer: Catherine Day Phillips
Owners: Sean and Dorothy Fitzhenry
Career record: 11 starts – 2 wins – 3 seconds – 2 thirds
Career earnings: $162,602
Top Equibase Speed Figure: 102
Pedigree: Curlin – Dixie Chicken, by Rahy
Age: 4
Color: Chestnut
Running style: Closer
Analysis: After an uneven first seven starts where Wyoming Bill raced once on turf, twice on dirt, and four times on the all-weather surface at Woodbine, he’s found consistency on the grass in his last four races for Catherine Day Phillips. He enters the Woodbine Mile off a runner-up finish to Gas Me Up in the Grade 2 Bet365 King Edward Stakes at this course and distance Aug. 16. He was beaten by three-quarters of a length in his graded stakes debut in the King Edward, which followed a win, a second, and a third in his three prior starts at distances ranging from 7 ½ furlongs to 1 1/16 miles on the Woodbine turf. There is sufficient pace in the Woodbine Mile to benefit a deep closer like Wyoming Bill; of course, that speed also should benefit the two international invaders and probable favorites, Notable Speech and One Stripe. Wyoming Bill picks up the services of legendary rider Frankie Dettori and should at least be passing tiring rivals late with a shot to fill out the trifecta or superfecta at a big price.
Jockey: Joel Rosario
Trainer: Mark Casse
Owner: Gary Barber
Career record: 18 starts – 7 wins – 5 seconds – 1 third
Career earnings: $1,037,127
Top Equibase Speed Figure: 107
Pedigree: Cairo Prince – Hopping Not Hoping, by Silent Name
Age: 4
Color: Gray or roan
Running style: Press the pace
Analysis: My Boy Prince has been a promising prospect since his 2-year-old season, finishing third in the 2023 Prevagen Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf while winning three of six starts. Last year, he ran second in the King’s Plate but found his calling this year back on the grass. He opened 2025 with a stakes win sprinting in May and remained at shorter distances for seconds in both the Grade 1 Jaipur Stakes at Saratoga and Grade 2 bet365 Highlander Stakes at Woodbine. With multiple stakes wins at one mile or longer on his résumé, My Boy Prince was entered by Canadian and U.S. Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse in the Grade 1 FanDuel Fourstardave Stakes and led into the stretch before he was caught late, beaten by two lengths while fading to fourth at a mile at Saratoga. That race should help in terms of building stamina, and My Boy Prince has proved competitive at the Grade 1 level over multiple seasons. He ran sixth in this race a year ago and looks primed to better that result in 2025 for Casse, who has won the Woodbine Mile three times with Tepin (2016), World Approval (2017), and Win for the Money (2024). Owner Gary Barber was a co-owner of 2006 Woodbine Mile victor Becrux.
7. Naptown
Jockey: Victor Carrasco
Trainer: Jose Magana
Owners: Pepe Stable and J L M Jacona Stable
Career record: 11 starts – 5 wins – 0 seconds – 2 thirds
Career earnings: $189,132
Top Equibase Speed Figure: 96
Pedigree: Munnings – Gold Medalist, by Medaglia d'Oro
Color: Bay
Running style: Stalker/closer
Analysis: Trainer Jose Magana claimed Naptown for $40,000 on behalf of his current owners out of a 1 ½-length win June 27 in a 1 1/16-mile turf race at Laurel Park. The bay gelding was unplaced in his next start but followed with a five-length win at Colonial Downs in a starter allowance race in which he set a new course record for 1 1/8 miles in 1:45.76. He then won again at Colonial in his most recent start, rallying from off the pace to win an allowance race by two lengths as the 11-10 favorite. Naptown was stakes-placed in 2024 as a 3-year-old on the all-weather surface at Woodbine, but he steps way up in class here for his first try in a graded race in the Woodbine Mile. Naptown is in very good form but would need to boost his Equibase Speed Figure by 18-20 points to be a serious win contender. His best-case scenario might be passing a few horses late to spice up the trifecta or superfecta at a juicy price.
Jockey: Patrick Husbands
Trainer: Mark Casse
Owner: Live Oak Plantation
Career record: 21 starts – 5 wins – 5 seconds – 4 thirds
Career earnings: $970,197
Top Equibase Speed Figure: 114
Pedigree: Mohaymen – Mayakoba, by War Chant
Age: 6
Color: Chestnut
Running style: Stalker/press the pace
Analysis: Win for the Money posted a 13.65-1 upset in the 2024 Woodbine Mile, giving U.S. and Canadian Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse his third win in this race and owner Live Oak Plantation its second. Live Oak previously won this race with the Casse-trainer World Approval in 2017 and Casse also won the Woodbine Mile in 2016 with Hall of Famer Tepin. Win for the Money is winless in five starts since the 2024 Woodbine Mile, but it’s not doom and gloom for the 6-year-old gelding. He’s been competitive with a trio of third-place finishes in his four starts this year, all in graded stakes. Win for the Money enters the Woodbine Mile off a third in the Grade 1 FanDuel Fourstardave Stakes Aug. 2 at Saratoga, where he was two lengths behind winner Deterministic, and he stacks up well against this group based on Equibase Speed Figures. Win for the Money won’t be the favorite in his repeat bid but he is a legitimate win candidate and a very good bet to finish in the top three.
9. Gas Me Up
Jockey: Rafael Hernandez
Trainer: Kevin Attard
Owners: Exline-Border Racing, Michael Jawl, Aaron Kennedy, and Tom Zwiesler
Career record: 8 starts – 4 wins – 1 second – 0 thirds
Career earnings: $263,592
Top Equibase Speed Figure: 103
Pedigree: Hard Spun – Chic Thrill, by Smart Strike
Age: 5
Color: Dark bay or brown
Running style: Closer
Analysis: Gas Me Up won one of four starts in Southern California as a 2-year-old but was sidelined for more than 20 months before beginning his comeback in Canada with new trainer Kevin Attard in June 2024. He won that return race by three-quarters of a length in a turf sprint at Woodbine but again was sidelined until June 2025. He finished fifth in that return from 11 ½ months off but followed July 20 with a runaway allowance win in a six-furlong turf race. Attard then challenged Gas Me Up against stakes competition for this first time since his 2-year-old season, and the 5-year-old gelding won the $200,000 Bet365 King Edward Stakes by three-quarters of a length at this one-mile distance. Gas Me Up steps up in class for the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile and would very likely need to improve his career-best Equibase Speed Figure by about 10 points to be a win contender. Given the lack of consistency throughout his career to date, it’s tough to predict how he will respond for Attard, who won this race in 2020 with Starship Jubilee. Gas Me Up could surprise, but I’d demand a fair price on the tote board.
