Graded stakes action across the country and in Canada brought some changes to the Equibase North American leaderboard, specifically among 3-year-old fillies with Counting Stars taking the lead following her win in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga.

At Del Mar, Listenupshance sprung a mild upset Saturday in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes and punched his ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, while Gold Phoenix made history in the Eddie Read Stakes on Sunday. Irad Ortiz Jr., who set the single-season earnings record in North America last year, is back on top of the jockey standings following a six-win day at Saratoga on Saturday, and leading owner Klaravich Stables became the first owner to surpass $5 million in purse earnings.

Counting Stars was simply spectacular in the CCA Oaks, drawing clear to win by 4 ¼ lengths for trainer Mark Casse with Ortiz Jr. aboard. Following a tough start to 2026, Counting Stars has put together a brilliant 3-year-old campaign, winning the Grade 2 Fantasy Stakes, running third in the Longines Kentucky Oaks, and winning Grade 1 races in in her last two starts in the DraftKings Acorn Stakes and CCA Oaks by a combined margin of eight lengths. With $1,430,000 in 2026 earnings, Counting Stars now leads the 3-year-old filly division and is sixth on the overall leaderboard. With the win, Counting Stars jumped one point to a 115 Equibase Rating, the same as Kentucky Oaks winner Always a Runner, who finished runner-up in the CCA Oaks.

Irad Ortiz Jr. had five additional wins on Saturday’s card including the Grade 2 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Stakes aboard Built. He ended the week with 12 wins (32%) and rode 59% in the money for $1,223,668 in purse earnings. He became the first jockey this year in North America to surpass $24 million and regained the lead among jockeys, with his brother Jose Ortiz now in second by $168,349.

Three horses moved into the top 50 in the older male division. Built got his first career graded stakes win with a 2 ½-length victory in the Vanderbilt. Trained by Wayne Catalano, Built earned his third win of the year and he is 5-for-6 in the money as a 4-year-old. With $416,392 in 2026 earnings, Built moved into 20^th among older males and 68^th on the overall leaderboard.

Listenupshance also moved into the top 100 on the overall leaderboard and 30^th among older males with a hard-fought narrow win in the Bing Crosby Stakes. As a 3-year-old, Listenupshance was competing in maiden claiming races at Del Mar and now is a Grade 1 winner after joining the Doug O’Neill barn. Listenupshance has not finished out of the money in his 4-year-old campaign with $336,160 in 2026 earnings.

On Sunday at Del Mar, Gold Phoenix, an 8-year-old gelding trained by Phil D’Amato, set a record when he earned his sixth stakes win at the seaside track, more than any other horse in the venue’s 99-year history. Dating back to 2022, Gold Phoenix has won four straight editions of the Del Mar Handicap along with the 2023 Eddie Read Stakes and this year’s edition July 26. The 2026 Eddie Read came down to the wire in a three-horse phoyo finish separated by a total margin of just a head. Gold Phoenix won by a nose over Cabo Spirit with Formidable Man in third. All three earned the highest Equibase Speed Figure (ESF) of the week with a 116. This was Gold Phoenix’s third graded stakes win of the year and he moved into 42^nd among older males with $284,500.

There were no changes in the top 10 trainers for the third consecutive week as Brad Cox continues to dominate the standings, more than $2.2 million ahead of Steve Asmussen.

Klaravich Stables became the first owner to surpass $5 million in 2026 earnings, winning at a 29% clip this year with 42 wins from 146 starters. Of the stable’s 42 wins, six came in graded stakes races.
