William Buick is based in England and made a name for himself when he became the first-call rider for trainer John Gosden. Born in Norway in 1988, Buick was England's champion apprentice jockey in 2009, the same year he won the E. P. Taylor Stakes in Canada.
Since 2010, Buick teamed with Gosden to ride some of the best horses in the world, including Nathaniel, The Fugue, and Elusive Kate. In the United States, Buick was the winner of the 2010 Arlington Million on Debussy.

In 2014, Buick signed on to ride first-call for the powerful Godolphin stable of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, riding primarily for Charles Appleby.
He won the Dubai World Cup in 2015 on Prince Bishop for Godolphin and added an Irish Derby win for Gosden with Jack Hobbs in 2015.
Buick earned his first victory in the Breeders' Cup World Championships when he guided Wuheida to a one-length score in the 2017 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf. He added a second Breeders' Cup win in 2018 when he guided Line of Duty to a rallying victory in a thrilling finish in the Juvenile Turf, and a third in 2021 when he rallied Modern Games to a convincing win in the Juvenile Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 6. Modern Games ran for purse money only when he broke through the starting gate before the race due to an accident involving his stablemate in the next post position.
The day after Modern Games' win, Buick added two more Breeders' Cup victories to his résumé when Space Blues rallied to take the FanDuel Mile Presented by PJDF and Yibir did the same to win the Longines Turf. He rode both horses for Godolphin and Appleby.
Buick enjoyed an impressive international season in 2022 that included Appleby-Buick Grade 1 wins with Nations Pride in the Caesars Saratoga Derby Invitational, Mysterious Night in the Pattison Summer Stakes, and Modern Games in the Ricoh Woodbine Mile.
In the 2022 Breeders' Cup at Keeneland, where he again rode for trainer Charlie Appleby, Buick picked up right where he left off in 2021 when he took the Juvenile Turf Sprint with Mischief Magic on Friday's juvenile card. Buick then came back on Breeders' Cup Saturday and won for the second straight year aboard Modern Games, who this time was victorious in the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile.
