Frankie is the son of champion Italian jockey Gianfranco Dettori and grew up idolizing his father, who promised to give him a his prized watch when his son won the Epsom Derby, a feat Frankie accomplished on the 14^th try aboard Authorized in 2007.

Dettori left school at age 13 and was winning stakes for noted trainer Luca Cumani by age 16.

Dettori’s stellar career has been primarily riding for Godolphin Racing, which has brought him numerous big wins in Europe, Dubai, and in the Breeders’ Cup in North America. He will always be remembered for his “Magnificent Seven,” winning seven races on one card at Ascot on September 28, 1996. A fan favorite, Dettori delights his backers with flying dismounts. When not riding, he enjoys wine and dancing in clubs, with Beyonce a particular favorite. His love of food and wine led him to open a chain of restaurants, Frankie’s Italian Bar and Grill, for what he calls “a bit of fun.” 

Dettori earned his 12th career Breeders' Cup win in 2016 when he guided Queen's Trust to a victory over Lady Eli. In 2018, Dettori picked up two more Breeders' Cup wins, as Expert Eye rallied late to prevail in the Mile and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Enable became the first Arc winner to take a Breeders Cup race in the same calendar year, winning the Longines Turf at Churchill Downs.
