Whether you are interested in making a couple of bucks on the race or just want to know a little bit about this year’s runners, we’ve got you covered with our 2016 Kentucky Derby Cheat Sheet.

No. 1 Trojan Nation (50-1)

Based in California, Trojan Nation made his first trip outside of California for the Wood Memorial Stakes a very profitable one, finishing second at 81.50-1 odds in his stakes debut to earn $190,000. The runner-up finish gave him sufficient points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard to qualify for the Derby despite not having a single victory on his resume. Trojan Nation would be the first maiden (a horse without a win to his or her credit) to win the Kentucky Derby since Brokers Tip in 1933. Sir Barton (1919), who swept the Triple Crown, and Buchanan (1884) also won the Kentucky Derby as maidens. The most recent maiden to start in the first jewel of the Triple Crown was Nationalore, who finished ninth in 1998.

The 108 Equibase Speed Figure he earned for winning the Southwest puts him right there with the top contenders and he enters the race off a strong second in the $1-million Arkansas Derby. Suddenbreakingnews’ unraced dam is by 2005 Preakness and Belmont winner Afleet Alex and his grandam (maternal grandmother), Party Cited, is a Grade 2 winner who produced multiple Grade 1 winner Composure. There is a lot to like here and you’d better believe he’ll be flying late.

After finishing second in four of his first five races, Creator broke through with a powerful 7 ¼-length win. He then finished third in the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes in his stakes debut before winning the $1-million Arkansas Derby by 1 ¼ lengths. Creator is clearly a Derby hopeful on the rise and this is a race that often is won by a horse who is maturing and getting good at the right time. Having improved his Equibase Speed Figure from a 96 to a 101 to a 103 in his last three starts, Creator looks like a very dangerous closer. He is, however, a high-strung individual, which could be a factor in front of a massive Kentucky Derby crowd.

He’s a very talented horse whose record does not indicate his ability, but I have a hunch he’ll be a buzz horse who generates a ton of interest during the week leading up to the Kentucky Derby. Like Tom’s Ready, the colt is owned by the racing stable of Gayle Benson, wife of Tom Benson who owns the NFL’s New Orleans Saints and the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans.

The last winner of the Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park to go on to win the Kentucky Derby was Animal Kingdom in 2011. Animal Kingdom was the rare racehorse who could dominate on just about any surface; Oscar Nominated would need to show some of that unique versatility and take a significant step forward. It’s a lot to ask, but Oscar Nominated should have the stamina to run well at 1 ¼ miles.

After winning the Gotham Stakes in March, Shagaf raced on a muddy track for the first time in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial Stakes on April 9. Despite not relishing the track, he fought to the finish line and finished fifth, four lengths behind winner Outwork. Prior to the Wood, Shagaf was unbeaten in three starts, and the 110 Equibase Speed Figure placed him right there with the best of his generation. The big question is whether a horse with only four races in his career got enough out of a disappointing final prep race on a surface he did not care for to fire his best on the first Saturday in May.

Out of Grade 3-placed multiple stakes winner Im a Dixie Girl, Mor Spirit is a serious threat to win the Kentucky Derby with his best performance.

Gustavo Delgado has trained four Triple Crown winners in his native Venezuela. Don’t sleep on this one.

Danzing Candy stamped himself one of the leading contenders for the 2016 Kentucky Derby when he defeated highly regarded Mor Spirit by two lengths in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes on March 12 in his stakes debut, but he came up empty in the Santa Anita Derby when racing on a sloppy track for the first time. Up until that race, he had improved his Equibase Speed Figure in each of his four starts. You can probably draw a line through the Santa Anita Derby and toss it out, but it’s fair to wonder if he got enough out of his final prep for the most important start of his career. This is a tough call, but if you liked him before the Santa Anita Derby, now is not the time to jump off Danzing Candy’s bandwagon. You’ll probably get somewhere around 20-1 odds on a very talented Derby entrant.

Unfortunately, his fourth in the Blue Grass Stakes left him on the outside looking in for the Kentucky Derby, needing one scratch to draw into the field. Should he draw in, don’t expect to see him in front at the finish line. If he ran out of gas going 1 1/16 and 1 1/8 miles, it’s tough to imagine him getting brave when stretching out even further to 1 ¼ miles. Besides, a maiden (a horse without a win to his credit) hasn't won this race since 1933.

Beaten by just a head for second in the Blue Grass, that cost him a certain spot in the Kentucky Derby field.
