Shagaf broke his maiden at first asking in November of his 2-year-old year and followed that up with an allowance win in January 2016. The colt then jumped onto the Triple Crown trail with a win in the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes in his stakes debut, earning 50 Kentucky Derby points and virtually guaranteeing a spot in the Derby starting gate should his connections decide to enter him.
Shagaf is a homebred for Shadwell Stable, who also has early Kentucky Derby favorite Mohaymen. Shagaf is by Bernardini out of the stakes-winning Unbridled's Song mare Muhaawara.
