Named after Col. Matt Winn who was Churchill Downs’ President and General Manager from 1902 to 1949 and who built the Kentucky Derby to what it is today, the Matt Winn Stakes has been run since 2002. Open only to 3-year-olds running 1 1/16 miles (8 ½ furlongs), the race has been won four times by trainer Steve Asmussen with jockey Rosie Napravnik winning the race twice, the most of all jockeys and trainers.
