Raise Cain

Raise Cain was unplaced in his career debut in September 2022 at Churchill Downs but made his second start a winning one three weeks later at Keeneland, where he drew away to a 5 ¾-length romp.

Tested next against stakes competition, the bay colt by Violence finished third in the Bowman Mill Stakes Oct. 29, 2022, at Keeneland. He closed out his 2-year-old season with a second-place finish to Jace’s Road in the Gun Runner Stakes at Fair Grounds.

Raise Cain started his 3-year-old season with an unplaced finish in the Leonatus Stakes at Turfway Park. He got back on track in a key spot in his second race when entered in the $300,000 Gotham Stakes March 4 at Aqueduct, a qualifying race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve.  He was reserved behind a fast and contested early pace through a half-mile in :45.53 in the Gotham, launched his bid entering the turn, moved off the rail under Jose Lezcano near the top of the stretch, and powered to the front near the eighth pole. He dominated by 7 1/2 lengths, completing one mile on a sealed-muddy track in 1:38.09 for his first stakes win and 50 points toward qualifying for the 2023 Kentucky Derby.

Raise Cain was produced by the winning Lemon Drop Kid mare Lemon Belle, a half-sister (same dam [mother], different sire [father]) to 2010 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic winner Unrivaled Belle, the dam of champion Unique Bella.
