The La Brea Stakes has been run annually at Santa Anita Park since 1974 and is the final Grade 1 stakes race restricted to 3-year-old fillies of the year. It is contested at seven furlongs (7/8 of a mile) on Santa Anita's winter meet opening day, Dec. 26, each year. Brea is "tar" in Spanish, and the race is named after an area in Los Angeles that includes the La Brea Tar Pits.

Notable winners of the La Brea include Terlingua, Hidden Lake, Spain, Indian Blessing and Switch. Trainer Bob Baffert has a record seven wins in the race.
