Saturday’s San Felipe Stakes Presented by DK Horse is the second of three Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve points preps held at Santa Anita Park, following the Robert B. Lewis Stakes Feb. 7 and ahead of the $500,000 Santa Anita Derby April 4.

The 1-2 finishers of last month’s Robert Lewis, Plutarch and Intrepido, won’t be in the San Felipe field, with the former currently sidelined and the latter pointing to the Santa Anita Derby. That means there’s an opportunity for one of Saturday’s seven entrants to collect 50 qualifying points to the May 2 Kentucky Derby, all but ensuring a position in the starting gate.

SAN FELIPE STAKES PRESENTED BY DK HORSE

Racetrack: Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, Calif.

Date: March 7

Purse: $200,000

Distance: 1 1/16 miles

Race: 8

Post Time: 6:30 p.m. ET

Notable winners: Journalism (2025), Life Is Good (2021), Authentic (2020), California Chrome (2014), Pioneerof the Nile (2009), Medaglia d’Oro (2002), Point Given (2001), Fusaichi Pegasus (2000), Artax (1999), Bertrando (1992), Sunday Silence (1989), Affirmed (1978), Hill Rise (1964), Determine (1954), Olympia (1949).

First held: 1935

1. Flashy Fritz: His only win in nine starts came in a one-mile maiden claiming race held in November 2025 at Del Mar. That was four trainers ago as he’s either been claimed or just switched conditioners each race since. Has some speed and he could be in this race as a “rabbit” to help stablemate Start the Ride’s chances, especially as he’s not Triple Crown nominated.

JOCKEY: Adrian Escobedo; TRAINER: Dan Blacker

2. Start the Ride: Interesting Cal-bred comes in off of a rallying 1 ¾-length win in the 1 1/16-mile California Chrome Cal Cup Derby Jan. 17 at this track. Looks to be on an ascending trajectory and new stablemate Flashy Fritz drawn to his inside could help create a solid pace to set up his kick.

JOCKEY: Armando Ayuso; TRAINER: Dan Blacker

3. Secured Freedom: Closed some ground late to nab third in the Robert B. Lewis but was no threat to Plutarch and Intrepido. That was his first two-turn race, and he’s put in a couple of nice workouts on this track since then.

JOCKEY: Kazushi Kimura; TRAINER: Tim Yakteen

4. Brant: The class of the field has not raced since setting the early pace and tiring to finish third behind 2025 champion 2-year-old male Ted Noffey in the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Presented by TAA Oct. 31. The $3 million auction purchase has been training steadily in recent weeks. If he can fire fresh off the layoff, he’ll be right in the mix at the finish.

JOCKEY: Florent Geroux; TRAINER: Bob Baffert

5. Potente: He’s another expensive colt trained by Baffert, costing $2.4 million as a yearling. Has only one start under his belt, a three-quarter-length win in a six-furlong maiden race Jan. 31 at Santa Anita, where he set a pressured pace throughout. Arguably has the best pedigree in the field for route racing and Baffert’s first-call rider Juan Hernandez takes the mount.

JOCKEY: Juan Hernandez; TRAINER: Bob Baffert

6. So Happy: Undefeated in two starts, he made quite the impression in the Jan. 10 San Vicente Stakes held at seven furlongs on this track, powering to a two-length win and earning a high speed figure. Can this son of champion sprinter Runhappy extend his talent to two turns? Should settle just behind the pacesetters and ideally get the jump on the field at the top of the stretch.

JOCKEY: Mike Smith; TRAINER: Mark Glatt

7. Robusta: Won a one-mile maiden race on this track back in January by setting the pace, but could not keep up in the Robert B. Lewis and weakened to finish sixth of seven. That does not bode well for his chances in this spot but good pace jockey Emisael Jaramillo does stay aboard and he will add blinkers as well.

JOCKEY: Emisael Jaramillo; TRAINER: Doug O’Neill

THE PICK: So Happy
