CARMA Goes Big for Horses, Ensuring ‘Aftercare is Not an Afterthought’
Equibase Earnings Leaders: Active Fall Stars Weekend Makes Big Impact
RacingFall racing is hitting its stride with just over three weeks remaining until the 2025 Breeders’ Cup. Sixteen “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series races across North America headlined last weekend’s action, many taking place during the opening three-day span of Keeneland’s Fall Meet dubbed Fall Stars Weekend. After all was said and done, there were several major shakeups in divisions ranking horses, jockeys, trainers, and owners based on North American earnings for 2025.
In the owners division, Spendthrift Farm was an absolute powerhouse this past week, moving into ninth on the 2025 list after posting six wins, including four graded stakes wins in the Darley Alcibiades Stakes (Tommy Jo), Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (Ted Noffey), Chillingworth Stakes (Tamara), and Surfer Girl Stakes (Brave Deb). At Keeneland, two-year-old filly Tommy Jo won the Alcibiades via the disqualification of Percy’s Bar, while juvenile colt Ted Noffey easily took the Breeders’ Futurity. Both are by Spendthrift Farm’s flagship stallion, Into Mischief. On the Equibase leaderboard, Tommy Jo and Ted Noffey moved into the top 100 among all racehorses in North America and are now tied for 70th in the standings and third in their respective 2-year-old divisions with $617,963 in earnings.
Another standout for Spendthrift was Tamara, the fourth foal out of Hall of Famer Beholder, who returned from an 11-month layoff to romp by 3 ¾ lengths in the Chillingworth at Santa Anita Park for Hall of Fame connections, jockey Mike Smith and trainer Richard Mandella.
In the most expensive race of Keeneland’s Fall Meet, Rhetorical delivered a standout performance in his first start outside of New York, capturing the $1.25 million Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes by three-quarters of a length while earning a career-best 120 Equibase Speed Figure, the highest in North America last week. The victory marked trainer Will Walden’s first career Grade 1 win. Rhetorical now stands at 45th overall on the Equibase leaderboard and 18th among older males with $763,800 in 2025 earnings. He has earned an automatic berth into the FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile Presented by PDJF.
At the age of 53, Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez continues to excel. He took eight trips to the winner’s circle last week, posting four stakes victories, three of them graded. Velazquez also enjoyed a five-win day on Saturday at Keeneland. He ended the week with $1,617,011 in earnings and moved into fifth among North American jockeys in 2025 with $16,354,869 in earnings.
Despite trainers Todd Pletcher and Brendan Walsh having banner weekends, they remain ranked fifth and ninth, respectively, on the Equibase leaderboard. Chad Brown was the only trainer who shook up the standings, moving up one spot into third among all conditioners in North America behind Brad Cox and Steve Asmussen after amassing nearly $1.2 million in earnings last week.
