An Exotic Betting Strategy for the 2025 Natalma Stakes
The $500,000, Grade 1 bet365.com Summer Stakes is one of three races scheduled for Saturday at Woodbine that are part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series. The Summer Stakes winner will receive a reserved spot in the starting gate for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Oct. 31 at Del Mar with entry fees waived and a travel stipend. One Summer Stakes winner has trained on to win the Juvenile Turf since the latter race was launched in 2007 – Pluck in 2010. Last year’s Summer Stakes winner, New Century, finished fourth in the Juvenile Turf.
1. Argos: Won impressively in his debut sprinting on the Ellis Park turf in July, and then shipped to Woodbine for the 6 ½-furlong bet365 Soaring Free Stakes and finished third behind Two Out Hero and Casson, only a neck behind the latter. If he continues to progress with more distance, he’s got a solid win chance.
JOCKEY: Flavien Prat; TRAINER: Riley Mott
2. Rude Procedure: He raced twice on all-the weather surface finishing first in a maiden event and then third in the Victoria Stakes before contesting the Soaring Free Stakes on turf. He was a longshot in that 6 ½-furlong race and contested the pace before tiring to finish fourth. His only victory came in gate-to-wire fashion and that appears to be his best path to an upset here, but it will be tough to accomplish.
JOCKEY: Fraser Aebly; TRAINER: Mark Casse
3. Timeframe: Finished a non-threatening fourth as the post-time favorite in his debut sprinting on Woodbine’s all-weather surface, and then improved markedly with a switch to turf, rallying on the rail to take a seven-furlong race by a half-length in mid-August. Might have the best win chance among Mark Casse’s entrants with Hall of Famer John Velazquez taking the mount.

4. Thesecretadversary: Irish-bred ships across the Atlantic after four solid starts, two in England and two in Ireland. He finished second in his first three appearances and then graduated in a 7 ½-furlong turf stakes at Tipperary last month. All four starts have come in the seven furlong to 7 ½-furlong range and he’s bred to run longer. Frankie Dettori figures to be aggressive riding him.
JOCKEY: Frankie Dettori; TRAINER: James Stack
5. Two Out Hero: Enters this race a perfect 2-for-2, both wins coming in impressive fashion. Led from start to finish to take a six-furlong sprint on Woodbine’s all-weather surface in July and then switched to turf and surged from a stalking position to win the bet365.com Soaring Free Stakes by 1 ½ lengths over Casson. Sports one of Woodbine’s most successful jockey-trainer combos and is arguably the leading local win contender.
JOCKEY: Rafael Hernandez; TRAINER: Kevin Attard
6. Bill of Ice: Debuted in late August on this course and rolled to a 3 ¾-length victory in a 1 1/16-mile race. Cedes experience to several opponents here but might just be talented enough to overcome that in his second career start. His pedigree is tailor-made for two-turn races.
JOCKEY: Pietro Moran; TRAINER: Kevin Attard
7. Casson: Began his career with two open-length wins on Woodbine’s all-weather surface in May and July, both at sprint distances and including the Victoria Stakes. He pressed the pace in his turf debut, the Soaring Free Stakes, but tired a bit late to finish second behind Two Out Hero and a neck ahead of Argos in that race. Pedigree suggests sprinting might be his best fit.
JOCKEY: Patrick Husbands; TRAINER: Mark Casse
8. Marcus J: Enters off of a dominant eight-length score in a six-furlong sprint held on Woodbine’s all-weather surface a little over a month ago. He set an unchallenged pace in that race and has the pedigree to both handle turf and to run longer. Will very likely try to lead this field all the way.
JOCKEY: Pietro Moran; TRAINER: Kevin Attard
9. Military Time: Interesting longshot making a jump up from a romping four-length win sprinting on Woodbine’s all-weather surface in mid-August. Has the pedigree to easily handle more distance and should sit a stalking trip under jockey Dylan Davis, who has had success riding Mark Casse-trained horses in recent years.
JOCKEY: Dylan Davis; TRAINER: Mark Casse
10. Wild Desert: Figures to be among the post-time favorites coming in from England, where he’s made three starts and ran well each time. After a dominant debut and then a close runner-up finish, he was hampered late in his stakes debut in July and settled for third by 1 ½ lengths going seven furlongs. A threat to give Godolphin and Charlie Appleby their third Summer Stakes win in five years.
JOCKEY: William Buick; TRAINER: Charlie Appleby
11. Jupiter: Began career with two sprints on Woodbine’s all-weather surface, winning his debut and then checking in second behind Casson in the Victoria Stakes. Was bumped early in the bet365.com Soaring Free Stakes and checked in fifth in his turf debut. Worth considering for exacta and trifecta tickets.
JOCKEY: Sahin Civaci; TRAINER: Mark Casse
12. Teddy’s Rocket: Ships north from Saratoga after only one start, a solid half-length score in a one-mile turf race in early August. Will need to move over from his outside post and get a good pace-stalking trip, and having jockey Joel Rosario also travel to Woodbine should help. A major player.
JOCKEY: Joel Rosario; TRAINER: Miguel Clement
THE PICK: Two Out Hero
