First run in 1986 at Keeneland, the 12 furlong (1 ½ mile) Elkhorn Stakes is open to horses 4 and over on the track’s turf course and is named after a nearby stream. The race started out at 1 1/8 miles but in 1996 the distance was extended to the current 1 ½ miles with African Dancer running the fastest edition of the race at this distance when stopping the clock at 2:27.80. African Dancer is also one of three horses to win the race twice, the same amount of times three owners have won it. Jockey Jerry Bailey won the race five times between 1992 and 2004 with Roger Attfield winning the race four times, most recently in 2011. Horses who have won the race include Yankee Affair, Lure and Point of Entry.
