The Jim Dandy Stakes is the traditional prep for Saratoga's Travers Stakes, the mid-summer derby. Both races are for 3-year-olds, and the Jim Dandy is usually held in late July or early August. The $600,000 race is contested at 1 1/8 miles on the dirt.

Famous horses to have won the race include Arts and Letters, Triple Crown winner Affirmed, Conquistador Cielo, Awesome Again, Medaglia d'Oro, Bernardini and Palace Malice. Trainer Todd Pletcher has more wins in the race than any other trainer, with six.
