First run in 1986 at Keeneland, the 12 furlong (1 ½ mile) Elkhorn Stakes is open to horses 4 and over on the track’s turf course and is named after a nearby stream. The race started out at 1 1/8 miles but in 1996 the distance was extended to the current 1 ½ miles with African Dancer running the fastest edition of the race at this distance when stopping the clock at 2:27.80. African Dancer is also one of three horses to win the race twice, the same amount of times three owners have won it.
