Running on dirt during its first four editions, the Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes became a one-mile (8 furlongs) turf race for fillies and mares in 1990 when it was known as the Capital Holding Mile Stakes. Since then, the race has gone through multiple name changes but settled on the Churchill Distaff Turf Mile in 2006. The race is open to females 3-years-old and older on the Kentucky Derby undercard. It has proven to be a popular early season goal with fillies such as Heat Haze, Miss Terrible, Coffee Clique, Stephanie’s Kitten and Tepin winning it since 2000.
