Irish-bred Roca Rojo began her career in her home country, winning a pair of races before shipping stateside to the barn of renowned turf trainer Chad Brown in 2016. She won her debut for Brown but finished fourth in the De La Rose Stakes at Saratoga before winning another allowance race in September 2016. She won her first graded stakes, the Grade 3 Athenia, and finished second in the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes to finish out her 4-year-old year.

Roca Rojo began her 2017 campaign on Kentucky Derby day at Churchill Downs, winning the Churchill Distaff Turf Mile in a photo finish. She then finished seventh in the Just A Game Stakes at Belmont Park but improved to finish third behind Lady Eli and Dickinson in the Woodford Reserve Ballston Spa Stakes at Saratoga in August. In her next start, Roca Rojo rallied late but could not catch winner Zipessa and runner-up Hawksmoor in the Grade 1 First Lady Stakes at Keeneland, settling for third.
