History

A 9.5 furlong race for fillies and mares 3 and older on the turf, the Modesty Handicap was held for many years at Arlington International. First run in 1942, the Modesty has been won by three horses twice with Calumet winning the race three times and two jockeys and trainers winning the race a leading three times each. Following the closing of Arlington the race was moved to Churchill Downs on the Longines Kentucky Oaks undercard.
