Contested at a distance of seven eighths of mile (seven furlongs), the Spinaway Stakes is run annually at Saratoga and is one of the first major graded stakes races open to 2-year-old fillies. This race often serves as a major steppingstone to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and is a "Win and You're In" event for that race.

Since 1990, fillies such as Meadow Star, Flanders, Ashado, Hot Dixie Chick, R Heat Lightning, Sweet Reason and Rachel's Valentina have won the race.
