Friday’s $1.5 million Longines Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downss has drawn a deep and competitive field of 3-year-old fillies.
Unlike some years, when a heavy favorite dominates the betting, the 2026 Kentucky Oaks looks wide open on paper. You can make a case for plenty of fillies to visit the winner’s circle, which means it’s a great betting race with the potential to yield big payoffs in wagers like the exacta (select the top two finishers in order) and trifecta (select the top three finishers in order).
We’ll try to cash exacta and trifecta tickets by emphasizing three fillies: #2 Zany (4-1 morning-line odds), #9 Always a Runner (10-1), and #10 Prom Queen (8-1).
Zany opened her career with three impressive victories. She won her debut by 6 1/2 lengths, she dominated the Grade 2 Demoiselle Stakes by 8 1/2 lengths, and she took the Suncoast Stakes by 2 3/4 lengths over Life of Joy, who returned to win the Grade 2 Fasig-Tipton Fair Grounds Oaks in her next start.
Zany subsequently was compromised by a slow pace when rallying to finish second in the Grade 1 Central Bank Ashland Stakes. With a better pace setup in the Kentucky Oaks, she can rebound and challenge for victory.
Meanwhile, Always a Runner is an exciting up-and-comer with two wins from as many starts. She dominated her debut by 6 1/2 lengths before stepping up against tougher competition in the Grade 3 Gazelle Stakes. Trainer Chad Brown has said Always a Runner wasn’t ready for a peak performance in the Gazelle, yet she still closed from sixth place to triumph by 1 1/4 lengths.
With the Gazelle and two recent workouts under her belt, Always a Runner figures to be sharper for the Kentucky Oaks. She’s a threat to rally and win under hot jockey Jose Ortiz.
Prom Queen also boasts promising credentials. She impressed in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks Presented by City National Bank last time out, pulling away in the stretch to win by 2 3/4 lengths. Three-time Kentucky Oaks-winning trainer Brad Cox conditions this improving filly.
We’ll favor Zany and Always a Runner on top of our exacta while using Prom Queen for second place. In our trifecta, we’ll add Grade 2 Fantasy Stakes winner #4 Counting Stars (8-1) and Ashland winner #11 Percy’s Bar (6-1) for third place.
