Stark Contrast, above winning the Eddie Logan Stakes, looks to transfer his elite turf ability to the all-weather surface at Turfway Park in the Jeff Ruby Stakes on Saturday. (BENOIT photo)

Determining the most likely winner of Saturday’s $777,000 Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks at Turfway Park isn’t easy. The Road to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve qualifier will be held at a distance of 1 1/8 miles on Turfway’s all-weather Tapeta Footings surface, but six of the 12 horses in the entries have yet to race on an all-weather track, instead proving their worth on dirt and/or turf.

It’s tempting to side with a proven Tapeta runner and avoid horses who may or may not reproduce their best form while trying Tapeta for the first time. But instead, I’ll side with the most accomplished horse and assume he’ll handle the surface switch without issue: #11 Stark Contrast.

Stark Contrast has competed with aplomb on turf. He won his first two starts on the surface, including the one-mile, Grade 3 Zuma Beach Stakes, in comfortable fashion. Then he faced a tough international field in the one-mile, Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and finished second, beaten by three-quarters of a length.

Stark Contrast returned to the winner’s circle in his first start of 2026. In the one-mile Eddie Logan Stakes, he pressed a slow pace before sprinting his final quarter-mile in a swift :23.04 to win by 2 ¼ lengths.

Strong finishing speed is Stark Contrast’s greatest weapon, and it bodes well for his chances of success while stretching out to 1 1/8 miles. Accomplished turf horses and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf alumni Endlessly and Tiz the Bomb both won the Jeff Ruby Steaks in recent years, and Stark Contrast appears talented enough to do the same.

John Battaglia Memorial Stakes runner-up Fulleffort (Coady Media)

I recommend betting Stark Contrast to win and playing him on top of an exacta using #2 Fulleffort and #8 Chaos Agent for second place.

Fulleffort has run well in two starts on the all-weather main track at Turfway, unleashing big late rallies to record runner-up finishes in the one-mile Leonatus Stakes and 1 1/16-mile John Battaglia Memorial Stakes. He was beaten only a neck in the latter race and should handle stretching out to 1 1/8 miles in the Jeff Ruby.

As for Chaos Agent, he debuted victorious in a 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight race on the Tapeta surface at Gulfstream Park, triumphing by 1 1/2 lengths. The runner-up pulled 11 3/4 lengths clear of the rest, so Chaos Agent ran strongly. He’s eligible to improve while making his second start and shouldn’t be underestimated.
