First run in 1935 for 2-year-olds, the race is now run for 3-year-old fillies with Turbulent Descent running the fastest Santa Anita Oaks at its current distance with a time of 1:14.05 in 2011. Bill Shoemaker holds the record of most wins by a jockey with 10 while D. Wayne Lukas has won the race eight times. Jockey Gary Stevens won the race four consecutive times from 1987 to 1990.
