Soothsay

Soothsay won her career debut going three-quarters of a mile Feb. 26 at Santa Anita Park by 1 ½ lengths. From there, Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella pointed her to the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks at 1 1/16 miles in a test of both class and stamina.

Jockey Flavien Prat capitalized on a fairly easy early pace and an opening on the rail nearing the far turn of the Santa Anita Oaks and sent the Distorted Humor filly through the opening to take the lead. She was challenged in the stretch by Santa Ysabel Stakes winner Beautiful Gift but showed tenacity in holding off the bid to prevail by a half-length.

In her next start, Soothsay finished second in the Grade 2 Summertime Oaks on May 30 at Santa Anita to Crazy Beautiful as the 4-5 favorite. She then shipped to Indiana Grand for the Grade 3 Indiana Oaks on July 7, and appeared to have lost all chance at winning after hopping out of the gate and then trailing the field into the backstretch. Under Flavien Prat, Soothsay made a sustained move through the far turn to reach contention and then rallied five-wide in the stretch to get up and defeat longshot Moon Swag by a neck.

Soothsay is out of Grade 2 winner Spellbound, by Bernardini.
