First run in 1936, the Ashland Stakes is a Kentucky Oaks prep race at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, Ky. named after Henry Clay’s breeding farm. The race was originally open to fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up when it was run from 1936 and 1937. The race was canceled the two following years but when returning in 1940 as a race only open to 3-year-old fillies and is currently run at 1 1/16 miles. Woody Stephens has the most wins of any trainer with four and four jockeys are tied for the most wins by a jockey with three. Horses on the winners list include Bewitch, Doubledogdare, Justakiss, Sugar and Spice, Blush With Pride, Princess Rooney, Gorgeous, Go for Wand, Inside Information, Urbane, My Flag, Silverbulletday, Take Charge Lady and Madcap Escapade.
