The world’s best grass milers compete in this race for horses 3 years old and older. The race was part of the inaugural Breeders’ Cup program in 1984. Recently the race played a part in the Horse of the Year race with Wise Dan winning it both years he won Horse of the Year honors (2012 and 2013).

The Mile is the Breeders' Cup race with the most repeat winners. In addition to Wise Dan, Miesque (1987 and 1988), Lure (1992 and 1993), Da Hoss (1996 and 1998) and Goldikova (2008, 2009 and 2010) each won multiple editions of the race.
