Starting his career as an assistant trainer for such greats as Clive Brittain, MacKenzie Miller, and T. J. Smith, Jonathan Pease is a British-born trainer who took permanent residence in France in 1979 and set up his own public stable. Since then, he has trained for trainers such as the Niarchos family, Gerald W. Leigh, and George Strawbridge.

The trainer has won six graded stakes races in the United States, including the 1994 Breeders' Cup Turf and 1997 Breeders' Cup Mile and finished second in the 1996 Breeders' Cup Mile. He will be sending his first horse to the Breeders' Cup since 2005 when Karakontie breaks from the gate in the 2014 Breeders' Cup Mile.
